Steve White (Whitey) has a problem. It's about 150m long, dirty and consumes rubber and 98 octane fuel like it's going out of fashion. They call it the Grannybowl - a home built speedway track where Whitey and his mates race on their days off. Sound like a problem you'd like to have? Yep, count us in too!
Whitey doesn't do things by halves, he's created a hub for family and friends where they can relax and unwind with some awesome racing, a few drinks and a BBQ to top off an octane-rich weekend. What's more this is not even his main gig - Whitey races speedway cars and uses the karts in the off season - Jealous much?
Running KT100S's is the flavour here, given their impressive power output for the price-point they are available at currently they represent incredible value for money. The availability of parts from CPR Kart Parts to service the engines ensures Whitey and his mates have fresh reliable engines all year round. And they need it, because the racing is close, competitive and 'contact' is referred to as 'rubbing' out there, so they aren't scared to trade some plastic and rubber!
Here's a run-down on Whitey and the Grannybowl. Scroll down for some awesome pictures and videos of the facility in use.
What is this awesome thing you've built?
We built our own track in the backyard
Why did you decide to build this project?
Had a crazy idea one day to get a kart just for some backyard fun, we had no idea how carried away things would get.
What is still left to do to finish it?
Nothing, the track is built, and the karts are ready, When we can we just water it down, and have some fun.
What are you going to do with it when it's finished?
We won’t be finished for a long time. What started as just a couple karts mucking around in the backyard has now grown into a group of family and friends that come together for some Karting, BBQ and laughs, nothing serious - just pure fun!
Why did you buy your parts from CPR?
I had no idea about karts until I started dealing with Paul and the team at CPR, they were extremely helpful in guiding me in the rite direction. Sharing their karting knowledge and looking after everyone even the little backyard guys is what it’s all about. Whenever I need something (even if I don’t know what it’s called) CPR is the only call i make, they understand and track whatever it is down for me.
What was the best thing about the CPR parts you used?
Their Awesome service, it means my repeat business
What other motorsport stuff are you into?
Sprintcar background, hence why we built our own mini speedway for the days we’re not playing with the big cars
